Jewish Hospital -
Sometimes, it’s easy … A great layout was supplied for this ad for Jewish Hospital. It was understood that this would be used as a billboard as well as magazine ads. Also there was the request from the Art Director to match the layouts warm tone as close as possible. No problem.
Set up was simple, color gels on the strobes, a gold fill card. With a few trips from camera to computer monitor we were able to match the layout perfectly. Overlays were used to make sure we left room for vertical and horizontal use of the image.
The young talent was a real trooper. Holding that thermometer at the precise angle was not that “fun”, but she did a great job. Overall, the capture segment (including final testing with talent) of the assignment took only about 30 minutes.
A small amount of retouching for the background, text placed and now you might see this on a street corner near you.
Kentucky Hunters for the Hungry (KHFH) -
There are those times - when the image for the advertisement is so very clear. Now - how to get there. Yes this image could have been shot in one take, and it would have been fine. But, a better final image was accomplished by breaking this down into three segments. Thanks to the Art Director for agreeing to take this route. This way we were able to accommodate peoples schedules and not compromise on the lighting of any of the three elements.
The pint size talent came as directed with several outfits to choose from and we selected one which visually supported the story. The plate of food was prepared as directed and is very close to that which is distributed at meal time. Our “hunter” stood in and while feeling a bit silly holding an empty / full plate - this worked very well for the composite image.
Of course PhotoShop magic was used here. Kudos to the Art Director. An attention grabbing image that came about because we had great communication up front and co-operation throughout the project.
Hanover College -
I love my job. I love to tell stories, that is - supply photos that help tell the clients story. I truly enjoy the hunt for the photo. Finding that unique point of view - that supports the ad tag lines or re-enforces the body of text. I had been briefed as to a few of the “sales” points that the client wanted to present.
I went exploring the campus of Hanover College on a beautiful day. My assignment, the 30,000 foot view - was to create a library of images that would illustrate campus life as well as “introduce” a reader to the scenery of what this small town college has to offer.
I found this corner of campus. A view unique to this mid-west college campus. The rock wall seemed like a logical foreground for a block (no pun intended) of copy. The curve of the wall balanced the edge of the woods and the horizon line. I shot this with and without a river barge and of course it is available as a horizontal as well. That’s what building a library of images is about - providing choices and flexibility in designing in the future. Never, ever limit the Art Directors creativity.
