get to know me

Dave Howard
My first camera was my mother’s Roy Rogers and Trigger snap shot box camera. It used 620 film and took surprisingly good pictures. Then again, I was eight years old. What did I know…

Fast forward to adulthood. Armed with a graduate degree in photo illustration from Ohio University, I worked various jobs: camera store clerk, supervisor of photo services for a medical teaching college, staff photographer for a Cincinnati-based sports magazine.

After documenting the Reds and Bengals for a time, I made a great discovery: commercial work. I quickly started my own company and, in addition to sports, began shooting model composites for talent agencies.

I also landed a gig as in-house contract photographer for the mighty Procter and Gamble where I shot everything from shampoo to coffee beans, shampoo to diapers, shampoo to tooth paste, shampoo to peanut butter…you get the point. Plus, I traveled a fair bit doing shoots in test markets. I even photographed P&G-sponsored NASCAR and U-boat drivers…holding shampoo (not really).

In 1994 I was lured to Louisville to shoot for and manage a large photo studio. Soon after came the sweeter deal: I was invited to head up and reorganize the official Kentucky Derby photo staff. I served for five years as facilitator, manager, senior photographer and all around good guy. Not to mention, I enjoyed an all-access pass every first Saturday in May. Not a bad perk.

Since then, I’ve traveled the country shooting products, celebrities, corporate gatherings and major sporting events for a myriad of clients, big and small. I’m on my own again and like it that way. I’m fortunate enough to pursue my love of art and photography while meeting some of the most fantastic people along the way.

Life’s good.
